For over three decades, Varèse Sarabande Records has been home to more of film music's greatest composers than any other label. Founded in the spring of 1978, Varèse Sarabande became the first label solely dedicated to film music – releasing dozens of new film scores each year, along with countless classics from Hollywood's glorious Golden Age. Many of the label's first recordings were produced by the great George Korngold and conducted by the legendary likes of Miklós Rózsa and Elmer Bernstein.
Over the years, the Varèse film music family grew to include virtually everyone you could think of, but with over 80 releases, no composer's music appeared more frequently on the label than Jerry Goldsmith's. Now with a catalog of over 1500 soundtrack albums, which grows by 60 to 70 titles each year, Varèse Sarabande remains the most prolific film music label in the world.
On May 11, 2013 the Golden State Pops Orchestra will stage a historic concert in celebration of Varèse Sarabande's 35th Anniversary and host a gathering of the label's roster of composers, along with other dignitaries from the film music world of Los Angeles.
A special concert program has been prepared specifically for the GSPO by Robert Townson, producer of over 1200 of Varese Sarabande's soundtrack releases since 1986. Townson will host the evening and present highlights from the label's past, with music by Jerry Goldsmith (Rudy), Alex North (Spartacus) and Georges Delerue (World Concert Premiere of Academy Award-winning A Little Romance, featuring flute soloist Sara Andon), plus a wide selection of contemporary blockbusters by Hans Zimmer, Michael Giacchino, John Powell, Danny Elfman and many others.

In 2005 GSPO performed the North American concert premiere of John Williams' Battle of the Heroes from Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith. The family friendly orchestra continues to introduce audiences to new repertoire by presenting music inspired by the Star Wars Universe - books, video games, fan films and spin-off films such as Star Wars: The Clone Wars. Experience music from the videogames Star Wars: The Old Republic and Star Wars Kinect and fan film Ryan vs. Dorkman by Kyle Newmaster and Gordy Haab. The 2013 celebration of the 35th Anniversary of the Varese Sarabande record label continues with the musical score composed by Joel McNeely and released on Varese Sarabande for the 1996 novel Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire, written by Steve Perry.
